Lapel Flower - Brief History

Lapel flowers, also known as boutonnieres have been reserved for weddings, proms, and funerals for the better part of the last fifty years. But the lapel flower once was a more natural part of a gentlemen’s wardrobe. The lapel flower pin for men is something that is much more versatile than only being pulled out for “special occasions”. As of late there has been a resurgence of men looking to accentuate their wardrobe with classic accessories.

So how did the flower lapel pin wearing begin? Legend has it that that when Prince Albert and Queen Victoria first married photography was still in its beginning stages. Their wedding photos were taken a year after the marriage, and Queen Victoria presented her groom with flowers as a token of her love. Being quite the gentleman, (guys take note) Prince Albert cut a hole in the lapel of his dress coat and inserted the flower. The rest is as we say, history. As one would imagine, the look was impressive and other men began to imitate the distinct style.

Through the years men commonly wore the flower lapel pin when they went out for various occasions, even a simple day at the office. Culturally, the flower lapel pin was the norm, but around World War II it began to disappear from the mainstream fashion for men. Flower lapel pins remained on the scene but generally were worn by popular entertainers such as Dean Martin, Mohammed Ali, Frank Sinatra and others. Soon, the classic and classy style became reserved for weddings and special occasions.

Today, the flower lapel pin is making a comeback in a big way. Many celebrities have led the charge in bringing this versatile accessory back to the mainstream. Many leading men in fashion have also stood out because of this amazing little men’s accessory. Are you ready to join them in becoming a bit more stylish?
